Ancient Reptile Ruins
Ancient Reptile Ruins provides a home to creatures that live near – not
in – the water. It also reinforces Atlantis Marine World’s
mission as an institution ready to save creatures in need, since many
of the animals in the exhibit came to the Aquarium as the result of a
rescue.
Katie, our resident spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus),
for example, was found in the basement of a home raided
by the Suffolk County Police. Underweight and missing teeth
when she arrived, she has thrived while at the Aquarium.
Hydro, our Asian water monitor (Varanus salvator),
also came to Atlantis Marine World in rough shape. Confinement
in a small tank had damaged his tail, which ultimately
had to be amputated. Hydro has since recovered, and enjoys
lounging in his display while delivering an unspoken message
that it’s wrong to keep large animals like him as
pets unless you have proper space and training.
Other residents of Ancient Reptile Ruins include:
- Reticulated python;
- Green iguana;
- Poison dart frogs.
